Canada Coast to Coast Day 45 August 29, 2022

Moncton New Brunswick to Machias Maine 224 miles

Typical road signs with both English and French.
Rows of grass hay rolled in plastic.

The skies are mostly cloudy today. Our hotel is small and when we went out to start the car everyone was gone. Rob got the owner of the motel to pull us. Luckily it was only a short distance. We drove on more freeway today than usual. Not as many bumps. The landscape varies between forest and agricultural. We still don’t see the livestock. Luckily we didn’t see any live wildlife on the roads. We did see several road kill raccoons. We also saw a few live wild turkeys. Many of the houses we passed early in the day had the same bush. The bush is covered with white blossoms. Connie thinks they are some form of hydrangea. A few of them are pink on top and white on the bottom. The flowers seem to be a conical shape of smaller flowers. The freeway took us through St John New Brunswick. A cruise ship was docked nearby. A little early for the fall colors. We have seen a few trees that have started to change colors. When we finally decided to have lunch we got off the freeway. There have been no rest areas of any kind. We thought there might be a park of something on the side road. No such luck. We went a short way in each direction and found nothing. We finally settled on what seemed like a park and ride. We never did see a rest area or pull out the entire day. The only rest rooms are in the convenience stores affiliated with the gas stations. When we got to the border crossing there were two stations open with one vehicle at each one. We had to wait at most ten minutes. The immigration process was simple. They did ask if we bought any PEI potatoes. Those are the ones from Prince Edward Island. Since they originated in Idaho we didn’t see a need. We were soon on our way. The road crews here must be taking lessons from Canada because the roads were narrow and rough. We encountered a few places of construction but didn’t have to wait long. We soon arrived in Machias Maine. The town is long and narrow. We found our hotel and got one of the nicest rooms to date. We are at the Bluebird Motel. We have a large room complete with two soft chairs and two straight chairs. We checked in and then went to the grocery store to get food for breakfast and supper. The supper choices didn’t look as appealing so we are going to try the Riverside Takeout. They are open until 6 pm according to the web. We got there about 5:20 and they were closed. We then came back to the Bluebird Family Restaurant. Their meals were huge. Rob had a haddock burger. He had enough fish for two sandwiches. Connie had clams with onion rings. There must have been an entire large onion used. No rain today so all is good. Oh just remembered that yesterday we saw plenty of evidence that Johnny Appleseed had been through the area. Numerous apple trees were along the roadside. Apples had fallen off the trees and were in the barrow pit. Rob took the night off and did not do any maintenance on the Woodie.
